Care

Care costs are those that our animals require on non-routine basis. Sometimes we intake animals that need special treatments or surgeries, which adds an additional cost, for example, dental procedures,  medications for bacterial infections, hernia repairs, in-depth diagnostic testing or heartworm disease treatment. When an animal comes into our care and they are in need of specific treatment, we make sure they receive the best care possible. In addition to extraordinary medical treatments, while an animal stays with VOCAL routine medications like, heartworm, flea and tick prevention, an core vaccinations are also necessary.

Thomas
Thomas is an adult male domestic shorthair feline. About a month after he was surrendered to VOCAL, he began showing signs of sickness and lost seven pounds. He developed nausea and was no longer eating. A biopsy was done on his liver and stomach, to determine why has wasn’t eating. During the biopsy, a feeding tube was put in place to aid in administering nutrients. Thomas has since been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, and the feeding tube will remain in place until he can be coaxed into eating food himself. We often see the characteristics that Thomas was displaying in adult cats when their environment changes or they are stressed. If gone unnoticed and untreated, liver damage can occur. Thomas’ diagnoses and treatment has cost $1,390. **UPDATE 4/22/19** Thomas has bounced back and is getting his feeding tube removed today, pending good blood work but, he is eating and doing well so fingers crossed!
